Because I enjoy trying new things, my work consists of a variety of subjects - figures, landscapes and abstracts. I work in watercolor, acrylic and oil - choosing the medium based on the special effect I wish to produce. I take pleasure in the process of putting paint to paper. Usually the final result of a painting comes from manipulating the medium until the work "speaks to me" or I am happy with the result. Recently I have specialized in working with watercolor on Yupo. This is a smooth synthetic "paper" that allows the paint to float on the surface. By adding paint, lifting, and layering, dramatic effects are possible.
The people in my paintings are generally derived from model sketches. Then I arrange them into a composition that invites the viewer to interact emotionally with the painting. Plein air painting appeals to me because of its spontaneity. Rather than copying nature I want to create an exciting painting of a scene that leaves the interpretation to the viewer.
Overall my goal is to enjoy the creative process and to produce works of art that others also enjoy.
